Why we chose the new Rumer airless pump packaging

Rumer organic personal lubricants are packaged in sleek and innovative airless pumps. An airless pump bottle means that your lube is stored in an isolated, air-free environment, even as the product is used.

In traditional jars, tubes or bottles, when product is used the remainder sits at the bottom and air enters the container to sit above the product. However in a container with an airless pump, an integrated piston rises up the container with each pump, pushing the lube toward the dispenser, without allowing an air gap.

Airless packaging is an especially great option for organic products as there is less of a need for strong preservatives.

Airless technology is becoming more popular globally as natural skincare and products like our lubricants become more dominant in the market, with a rise in brands turning to self-preserving formulas and fewer synthetic preservatives in place of parabens, thiazolidinones, and formaldehyde releasers.

Research suggests that high quality airless pump bottles with an unpressurized chamber and no air exposure can extend a product's shelf life by up to 15%, so airless pumps are quickly becoming popular across the beauty and personal care industry worldwide.

Our airless pumps are made from polypropylene, a versatile, impact resistant and lightweight material with temperature and chemical resistant properties. This means that products packaged in polypropylene won't normally have any leaching, taste or odour issues, and travel well.

We also chose to package our organic lubricants in highly recyclable polypropylene containers because polypropylene is New Zealand's third most commonly recycled rigid plastic, with 93 percent of Kiwis having access to rPP recycling via kerbside or drop off initiatives, and local reprocessing of rPP roughly doubling in the four years to 2021, which was also reflected in falling import levels of recycled polypropylene (and associated carbon miles) over that time.

In 2021 Plastics NZ initiated a cross industry working group including product and packaging manufacturers, retailers, recycling contractors, reprocessing operators, WasteMINZ plus other resource recovery experts, committed to making a circular economy a reality, and we want to be part of that solution.

So, of course, Rumer packing is all compostable (paper wrapping) or recyclable (the pump containers).
